The 3D BIM Survey at the Birthplace of King Henry VII, Pembroke Castle Gatehouse, Wales.

Pembroke Castle, renowned as the birthplace of Henry VII, the founder of the Tudor Dynasty and Britain’s only Welsh king, holds a significant place in history. Built in 1093, this medieval fortress in Wales is a Grade I listed site, celebrated not only for its royal connections but also for its impressive architecture and rich historical heritage.

The castle’s Great Gatehouse was constructed using limestone sourced from the surrounding ditch. The Gatehouse stands three stories tall and includes three ancient portcullises. The lower level of the Gatehouse features the gate passage, fortified with portcullises, doors, murder holes, and arrow loops for defence. This architectural marvel, dominating Pembroke’s Main Street, is one of the finest and earliest examples of its type.

Today, the Gatehouse houses historical exhibition rooms, and combine sculpted figures, setwork, mural paintings, graphic panels, lights, and a triggered audio sequence to recreate the most important scenes in the Castle’s history. The Gatehouse overlooks the large courtyard, which includes the world’s largest map of Wales and the largest painting in the UK.

The delivered 3D BIM model is a testament to the team’s efforts, and the early feedback has been excellent.”

The survey of the Gatehouse was undertaken with the latest topographical and laser scanning technology and the output included a LOD3 and LOD4 3D Revit (BIM) Façade & Roof Model.
