SUMMARY

Balliol College, one of the oldest colleges at the University of Oxford, features an impressive dining hall built in 1877. As one of the larger college halls, it boasts a stunning vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows, and a magnificent pipe organ. Seating up to 226 guests, the hall is adorned with portraits of former masters and distinguished alumni.

To aid conservation efforts and inform restoration planning, Surveybase conducted a Heritage 3D Measured Building Survey, delivering a 3D BIM Model to our LOD4 façades and LOD4 internal modelling specification, alongside 2D plans including floor plans, elevations, a roof plan, and sections. This comprehensive dataset supports ongoing preservation while respecting the historical significance of this landmark.

Surveying Balliol College presented challenges, including its complex architecture, the presence of students throughout the day, and the sensitivity required for working in a historic environment. To overcome these, we deployed advanced surveying technology, ensuring intricate details were captured with precision and minimal disruption.

As a proud addition to our growing portfolio of heritage projects, Balliol College joins notable sites such as Mansfield College, Oxford; Caernarfon Castle, Wales; and the Former Mineral Hospital, Bath. Each of these projects highlights Surveybase’s expertise in delivering highly accurate heritage-standard 3D surveys for historic sites.
