SUMMARY

Beatties, Wolverhampton is an iconic building with a rich history, serving the community as a department store for over 140 years. While its heritage is evident in its architectural charm, the building is now entering a new chapter as it undergoes redevelopment into modern commercial space along with up to 306 residential flats, ensuring its legacy continues within the city.

Opened in 1877, the Beatties family owned and operated the store right up until 2005 before House of Fraser took over, eventually closing the store in 2020. Partly locally listed, the building has undergone a major strip-out, leaving only the stripped structure with the iconic concave elevation remaining intact.

Surveybase delivered a comprehensive 2D Topographical and Measured Building Survey including floor plans, elevations, sections, roof and site plan. To overcome significant health and safety challenges posed by the building’s current condition, the survey incorporated a UAV Drone survey. This allowed us to fully capture the external roof area while ensuring the safety of our team. This marks the second time Surveybase has undertaken a measured survey of Beatties, having first surveyed the site in 2019 while the department store was still operational.

Jordan King, Managing Director, comments, “It’s fantastic to be back surveying Beatties. The building is at the heart of the community, and many locals took time to discuss with our Surveyors the importance the building played through services, jobs, and keeping the city centre vibrant. The strip-out has been significant, but we’re so pleased to see the vision moving forward.”

This survey underscores Surveybase’s dedication to supporting redevelopment projects with advanced surveying services. By delivering accurate and detailed plans, we provide essential data that facilitates the seamless transformation of historic buildings like Beatties, ensuring they retain their heritage while serving modern purposes for generations to come.

Beatties is a proud addition to our commercial portfolio, joining notable sites such as Barclays House, Poole, Portwall Place, Bristol & Smithson Plaza, London.
