SUMMARY
Caernarfon Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Wales’ most iconic medieval fortresses. Originally a motte-and-bailey built by the Normans in the 11th century, it was transformed into a grand stone castle in 1283 under King Edward I. Known for its distinctive polygonal towers, Roman-inspired banded stone, and Eagle Tower, it remains a symbol of medieval military architecture, encircled by 800 yards of town walls and two gates.
To aid in conservation efforts and inform restoration planning, the client required an accurate 3D BIM model of the castle. The model needed to capture detailed data of the façades, roofs and internals, ensuring ongoing preservation while respecting the historical significance of this landmark.
Surveying Caernarfon Castle posed challenges, including complex architecture, access restrictions, and preservation sensitivity. To overcome these, we deployed advanced surveying technology, allowing us to capture intricate details safely and effectively. Careful planning with site management allowed us to survey outside regular hours, minimising disruption to visitors and ensuring unobstructed access.
The result of the survey was a comprehensive 3D BIM model, delivered to LOD4 façades and LOD3 internal modelling standards, providing an accurate and detailed representation of the castle. This model will support ongoing conservation and restoration efforts, facilitating smooth integration with future planning and preservation strategies.
Jordan King, Managing Director, commented: “The Caernarfon Castle survey is a truly exceptional project in our portfolio. We are honoured to have had the opportunity to document this iconic landmark, supporting its conservation efforts and playing a part in preserving its historical significance for years to come.“
