The recent heat wave was an extraordinary environmental event with temperatures in the UK exceeding 40 degrees centigrade for the first time since records began and only 24% of expected rainfall fell during July and August. Drought was declared across huge swathes of the country; it was a challenging time and the impact will be felt for many months to come. However, the heatwave proved devastating for some UK families as it literally destroyed their homes.
Whilst these images are disturbing, we could not begin to appreciate the scale of damage until we witnessed the destruction with our own eyes.
Earlier this month we visited Dagenham on behalf of the Local Authority to survey the remains of seven houses burnt down by wildfires. In the words of Senior Surveyor, Alex Iftimi, “I was shocked to see the condition of the buildings, this was a peaceful housing estate now its a war zone. I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed such destruction and cannot begin to imagine the fear of homeowners or the anguish of losing their possessions. In a small way my visit to the site is a sign of better to come. We are the first phase of the rebuild process and I sincerely hope that lives can return to normal soon.”
More than 60 UK homes were destroyed in the heatwave of 2022.
